There are always two guards at the altar and it's prohibited to approach the altar or to talk with them.

A glass elevator will bring you to the top of the Vittorio Emanuele II Monument.This superb view is in front of you at the moment of arrival. It's really breathtaking panorama. Colosseum is on the right. The ticket office is next to the elevator after the bar just behind the Memorial site.

It was built to commemorate the first king Vittorio Emanuele II, who had played a major role for the unification of Italy (1870).

Since it's very high, it can be a good landmark when you lose your location in the heart of Rome. Well, do you know that you can go up to the roof of this building? Previously there was only staircase but few years ago the lift was built and now you can go up to the roof easily in a few seconds!
